Learn to Sew Beginning Sewing Course

If you are wanting to try your hand at sewing for the first time or if you are a rusty seamstress that would like a refresher, this is the class for you!  Whether you’re interested in garment or drapery sewing, wanting to make household or baby items, aspiring to become a quilter or just wanting to make fun craft projects, the foundational skills taught in this three-day course are essential to any type of sewing.

You will build your skills step-by-step through sewing a series of 9 projects. You will choose from a variety of pre-cut fabrics for the first few projects so you can focus on learning the art of sewing and developing good sewing habits. Then you will learn rotary cutting techniques and how to cut out using a pattern and scissors. Most of your time will be spent sewing although there will be a few short lectures throughout the day. There will be lots of time for asking questions and one-on-one help to get over all the beginning sewist’s (or rusty sewist’s) “jams”.

• Making friends with your sewing machine: learning to operate, control and care for a standard sewing machine and how to get your machine going again when you get stuck.
• Developing good sewing habits
• Understanding different types and uses of fabric
• How to sew straight lines and accurate seam allowances
• The importance and art of pressing
• Thread type, color and basic topstitching techniques
• Several seam finishes and lining
• Sewing casings for both drawstrings and elastic
• Trimming and turning corners
• Accent trim
• Sewing and clipping curved seams
• Constructing straps and patch pockets
• The basics of rotary cutting
• Introduction to cutting out with a pattern and scissors

You’ll be sewing most of the time, with a few short lectures throughout the day. There will be lots of time for asking questions and one-on-one help while you sew.

You’ll go home with the 9 projects you’ll sew in class, our Learn to Sew book (with fully illustrated directions), an apron pattern and the knowledge that you really can sew!
